At Hillside Dental, we never spare any effort to repair damaged teeth. However, there are times our best option is to remove a tooth to maintain your oral health. There are many reasons for tooth extraction, among which are the following:

• Extensive Tooth Damage: Extracting a tooth is always a last resort. However, it may be our only viable option if a tooth is damaged beyond repair due to deep decay, a fracture near the gum line, or dental trauma.
• Periodontal (Gum) Disease: This progressive, destructive condition can destroy the bones and tissues supporting the teeth, leaving them loose and weak. If we can't save a tooth that's lost its support, we may need to extract it.
• Orthodontic Treatment: We often need to selectively extract one or more of your teeth to address overcrowding or as a component of an orthodontic treatment plan. That helps create the space the remaining teeth need to shift into alignment.
• Wisdom Teeth Removal: Wisdom teeth often cause problems, including coming in crooked, being impacted or stuck in the jaw, causing pain, or developing decay or infection. We may recommend wisdom teeth extraction to safeguard your oral health and prevent future problems.

There are two types of extractions: Simple and surgical. At Hillside Dental, Dr. Jeon and his team will decide the type of extraction you need, depending on whether your tooth is visible or impacted.

During a simple extraction, Dr. Jeon will administer a local anesthetic to numb the area around your tooth. Then, he will use an instrument called an elevator to loosen the tooth and forceps to remove it. A surgical extraction process, on the other hand, involves making a small incision in the gums to access and remove the tooth. Most of our patients report minimal to no pain during and after the procedure.

A tongue-tie, also known as ankyloglossia, is a common condition that's present at birth. It occurs when the tissue under the baby's tongue called the lingual frenum is shorter, thicker, or tighter than usual, restricting the tongue's range of motion. That can lead to many problems, including breastfeeding difficulties, speech impediments, trouble eating and swallowing, poor oral health, gum recession, sleep disorders, and a compromised airway.

Electro-Surg tongue-tie removal involves using an electrosurgery unit to pass a high-frequency current through a small electrode into the frenulum. As the procedure removes the tissue, it is cauterized, so there is no bleeding. The safe and reliable treatment option will leave your little one with a marked improvement in tongue movement and speech.

Tori are bony growths in the mouth that are covered by gum tissue. They are harmless and are considered normal. However, they can interfere with your dentures placement and orthodontic treatment.

If your tori need removal, the procedure is simple and straightforward. We'll start by numbing the area and will administer dental sedation if needed for your comfort. Dr. Jeon will make a small incision to access the tori, remove them, smooth down the bone, clean the area, and then use dissolvable sutures to close the wound. After tori removal, the regrowth of the bone is very rare.
